A Hospice Chaplain's Job is to Offer Spiritual Support
View all current openings for chaplains.
A hospice chaplain plays a spiritual role that goes beyond prayer. In a hospice chaplain position, you’ll offer spiritual support to patients and families and bereavement assistance after a loved one's passing.
“I’m like a coach. I help the family find their own answers and their own release from fears and worries.”
Hospice chaplains honor each patient’s spiritual beliefs and respect the family’s cultural traditions. When requested, hospice chaplains work closely with the patient’s clergy.
With a hospice chaplain career at VITAS, you’ll benefit from:
- Support from a team that focuses on patient-centered care.
- The ability to make your own schedule, to see your patients when they need to be seen.
- A company that stands by its values and supports your professional goals.
What Does a Chaplain Do in Hospice?
“I get the greatest satisfaction in my job as a hospice chaplain by being of service to people who are hurting and by helping them find peace,” says Charles Lowry. As a chaplain with VITAS Healthcare, Charles provides spiritual support to seriously ill patients and their loved ones, meeting them “where they are” in their spiritual journey.
As a VITAS hospice chaplain, Charles visits four to five patients each day. Although he carries his Bible and has a scripture reading at the ready, he is always aware of his patients’ personal beliefs, culture and traditions. As a hospice chaplain in culturally diverse South Florida, Charles ministers to patients of many beliefs, denominations and religions, from Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu to nonbelievers.
